It’s Monday! What are you reading?

IMWAYRI am still reading a few of the older Newbery honor books so this week I took time to enjoy Three Times Lucky by Sheila Turnage. (a middle grade read) Mo, real name Moses, and her partner in crime Dale take us on a great adventure. Mo is seeking her Upstream Mother, Detective Starr is seeking a bank robber, and the small town of Tupelo Landing is in for a few surprises including a murder.imgres

The action is quick, and funny in this exploration of “what is family” and “where do I fit in.”  Mo learns that she is not the only person who feels like she has been cast away. There are powerful lessons that are shared in this story and Turnage presents them in such a delightful way.

This could be a great read aloud or a book shared in a small group Literature Circle.  The mystery of the murder, as well as a look at the deeper idea on what creates a family is perfect for group discussions .

We Are The Goldens by Dana Reinhardt (YA read) will be released on May 27th. Reinhardt takes us right into the struggles of truth between to very close sisters. The story is told by Nell, the younger sister who is struggling to still be a part of her sisters changing world but also seeking to be herself.imgres-1

Nell has always been the happy shadow to her sister Layla but now things are changing quickly as they both walk the halls of the same high school. Layla, a few years older, is stepping into a world that Nell knows is not right but the lines of trust and truth are blurring.

Reinhardt does a masterful job of leading us through the quick growing up of Nell. Her own confusion about right and wrong, healthy and unhealthy relationships that we have all needed to navigate in high school. Choices are hard and maybe some need to be made even when they don’t feel right.

I have not read any of Reinhardt’s books so this was a great introduction for me into her writing. Her characters are strong and feel real to their time and place. This is one I would add to a classroom library. It is a great choice book for teens.

I am excited to read some of her other books – The Summer I Learned to Fly or Odessa Again.

This week I am reading:

  • The Riverman – half way through and need to finish now!
  • Rose Under Fire
  • The Cracks in the Kingdom (book two of The Colors of Madeleine series – Hmm I have not read book one so may have to back up and check out book one.)

What are you reading?

How are you liking The Riverman, I’ve been seeing it a lot quite recently and I truly am intrigued. I like the dynamics between the sisters – reminded me a little bit of Jacob Have I loved.
