A student A teacher

Slice of Life

March 29, 2012

Together

Sounds, letters, blends

In youth she tumbles

Into a new world

Of language and cultures

With ease and grace

She arrives each day

Changing, molding, acquiring

The words of America

Frightened but quick to learn

With a smile that

Pulls the worlds together

Blends, sounds, letters

In middle age I listen hard

Seeking to step into a new language

Writing each blend

Checking, double checking

Listening to each sound

She repeats over and over

I cannot hold the sounds,

Or remember the words or write

The shapes of Ethiopia

Letters, blends, sounds

We work hard to learn

A student and a teacher

Youth is quick to adapt, to embrace

The sounds, the style of a new culture

I do little to more her forward

Age comes to new sounds slowly

But learning under her patient tutoring

She works hard to bring me into her language

We build a world of words and

Understanding together
